The Alte Donau is the former Danube riverbed, cut off when the river was straightened in the 1870s and now Vienna’s best swimming lake. Warm, clean water, boat rentals, Strandbad (traditional Viennese beach resort) facilities, and a ring of waterfront restaurants in the 21st and 22nd districts. U1 Alte Donau or U1 Kagran, about 25 minutes from the city center. Free public beaches available; the paid Strandbad Alte Donau costs around EUR 5-7. Season runs May to September. Less touristy than the Donauinsel canal; this is where Viennese people actually spend summer weekends.
