The Alpinarium Galtür combines an avalanche deflector with a memorial museum for the 31 people killed in the 1999 Galtür avalanche, one of the worst natural disasters in modern Austria. The building is embedded into the hillside as protective infrastructure and houses a permanent exhibition on the disaster and on alpine risk. It was designed by Viennese firm Marte+Marte and received significant architectural recognition. Adults pay around EUR 7-9. Open in summer and ski seasons following Galtür’s tourist calendar. Galtür is 30 km from Ischgl at the end of the Paznaun valley; car required. Combine with the Silvretta reservoir, a short drive above the village.

On 23 February 1999, an avalanche struck Galtür and killed 31 people in the worst alpine disaster in Austria in decades. The Alpinarium was built partly as a protective barrier against future avalanches and partly as a memorial to those who died.
