The Alpe-Adria-Trail starts at Heiligenblut below Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner (3,798m), and walks 750 kilometers south through Carinthia, Slovenia, and Friuli to the Adriatic coast at Trieste. Thirty stages, roughly one month for the full route. The route crosses the former Habsburg corridor connecting the alpine world to the Mediterranean and passes through the cultural mixing zone of German, Slovenian, Friulian, and Italian traditions. Individual stages are doable as day hikes; the full GPX track is at alpe-adria-trail.com. Hut accommodation must be booked ahead in July and August. Heiligenblut is accessible by car from Spittal an der Drau.
