Aggstein Castle ruin sits 300 meters above the Danube in the Wachau gorge, one of the most commanding positions in the entire valley. The famous Rosengaertlein is a small rock ledge where medieval prisoners were allegedly made to choose between starving and jumping. The story may be embellished but the location makes it entirely believable. Open April to October, adults around EUR 7-9. Reach it by car from Aggsbach Dorf or on foot via hiking path from the river. Combine with Melk Abbey (30 km upstream) and Durnstein for a full Wachau day. The DDSG boat service stops at Aggsbach Dorf if you prefer arriving by river.
