The Werkraum Bregenzerwald is a free-entry craft exhibition centre in Andelsbuch in the Bregenzerwald valley, housed in a building designed by Peter Zumthor and completed in 2013. The Werkraum association connects around ninety Bregenzerwald craftspeople with contemporary design, and its rotating exhibitions cover the regional traditions of woodwork, textiles, ceramics, metalwork and cheese production alongside contemporary applied design. The work on show is for sale. This is not a conventional museum. It is a working association that happens to have an extraordinary building as its public face, a single exhibition hall in untreated concrete and timber that demonstrates the collective’s philosophy of visible making. Vorarlberg has an internationally recognized contemporary architecture culture rooted in the same local craft intelligence the Werkraum documents, and the two are worth understanding together.
