The Wasserturm in Wiener Neustadt is a preserved industrial water tower in a city with a dramatic and largely unknown history. Wiener Neustadt was founded in 1194, served as an imperial residence and the birthplace of Emperor Maximilian I, and was over 60% destroyed in Allied bombing in WWII. About 50km south of Vienna by rail. The cathedral’s Maximilian memorial chapel is the primary historical destination; the water tower is a secondary landmark in a city worth visiting for its postwar-reconstruction urban character.
