Traunstein

The Traunstein rises to 1,691 meters directly from the eastern shore of the Traunsee, making it the defining mountain of the Upper Salzkammergut and one of the most visually striking peaks in the lake district. The ascent is a full-day serious mountain hike with via ferrata sections; it’s not a casual outing and requires proper equipment and experience. The view from Gmunden across the lake to the mountain’s profile is the easier approach. For the hike, start from Ebensee or the eastern lake shore in June through October.
