The Theatinerkirche on Odeonsplatz is the most Italian building in Munich, and that was fully intentional. Elector Ferdinand Maria commissioned it in 1663 after the birth of an heir, brought Italian architects, and explicitly copied Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome. The bright yellow facade and twin towers are one of Munich’s defining silhouettes. Inside, the Baroque (ornate 17th-18th century) drama is intact. The crypt beneath holds the remains of several Wittelsbach rulers. It’s on Odeonsplatz at the top of Ludwigstrasse, free to enter, and worth 30 minutes before or after the Residenz.
