Most people drive through the Rauris valley on the way to the Hohe Tauern National Park without knowing they’re passing through one of medieval Europe’s most important gold-mining regions. The Tauerngold Lehrpfad educational trail changes that. Signage along the path explains the geology of alluvial gold deposits in the Tauern mountains, the medieval and early-modern mining economy, and how Rauris gold funded Habsburg court life and military campaigns for centuries. The trail is free, walks in under two hours, and pairs well with the Tauerngold Erlebniswelt experience further up the valley at Kolm Saigurn.
