Rust, the wine town on the Neusiedler See in Burgenland, has the largest stork colony in the province with around 15 nesting pairs on rooftops and chimneys throughout the old town. Storks are present April-August; peak activity is May-June. Free to observe while walking the old town. Best combined with a visit to a Rust Heuriger wine tavern, many of which are directly under the stork nests. Rust is about 50 km south of Vienna; accessible by train to Eisenstadt, then bus, or by car.

Stork Colony
Rust is the small wine town on the western shore of the Neusiedler See, and its rooftop stork colony is the detail that distinguishes it from every other Burgenland Heuriger village. White storks have nested on the chimneys and rooftops of Rust for centuries, and with around 15 nesting pairs the colony is the largest in Burgenland.
