Stift Rein, 15 km northwest of Graz at Rein 1, holds the legitimate claim to being the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world, founded in 1129 just 31 years after the Cistercian order itself was established. The Baroque church interior was remodeled in the 18th century with ceiling frescoes by Josef Adam von Moelk. Less visited than Melk or Gottweig but historically significant.
