Stift Klosterneuburg, 12 km north of Vienna on the Danube, holds the Verdun Altar (1181) in its Leopold Chapel: 51 medieval enamel panels by goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque enamelwork in the world. Charles VI planned to rebuild the monastery as an Austrian Escorial; one completed wing with Habsburg and Austrian crowns on the copper domes shows the scale of that ambition. Guided tours daily approximately EUR 14-16; S-Bahn S40 from Vienna in about 30 minutes. Allow 1.5-2 hours.

An Augustinian monastery north of Vienna, founded in 1114 and one of Austria's richest religious foundations. The Verdun Altar (1181) in the Leopold Chapel is a masterpiece of medieval enamel art. The abbey also houses a significant art collection and wine cellar.
