Stift Heiligenkreuz in the Vienna Woods, 26 km southwest of the city, is the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world, founded in 1133 by the Babenberg rulers of Austria. The Romanesque cloister and church have been in continuous use for 900 years. The resident monks sing Gregorian chant at daily Vespers (4:15pm, free and open to visitors), the same chant their 2008 album took to number one in Austria. Guided tours approximately EUR 11-13; by bus from Baden bei Wien or by car through the Vienna Woods.
