Sternwarte Mariazell

An observatory at the pilgrimage town of Mariazell is not the obvious pairing, but the Sternwarte Mariazell exists in part because the same darkness that makes a mountain pilgrimage town atmospheric at night makes it good for stargazing.

Sternwarte Mariazell is an observatory in Austria’s most important pilgrimage town, running public stargazing evenings during summer. Mariazell’s mountain elevation and low light pollution make the dark sky a genuine draw. Check locally or the Mariazell tourism site for the current schedule. Mariazell is accessible by the scenic Mariazellerbahn narrow-gauge railway from St. Pölten (about 2.5 hours). Best combined with a visit to the Baroque pilgrimage basilica.
