Steingasse is a narrow medieval lane on Salzburg’s right bank at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg, part of an ancient trade route that predates the Baroque city. It preserves medieval street proportions that the left bank lost to development, and Joseph Mohr (who wrote the words to Silent Night) was born here at number 9. Free and always accessible. Cross the Staatsbrücke from the left bank and walk upstream. Best combined with a walk up the Kapuzinerberg above it.
