Starnberger See is a glacial lake 30 kilometers south of Munich, reachable in about 35 minutes on the S6 S-Bahn. The Votivkapelle on the east shore near Berg marks where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was found drowned under disputed circumstances in 1886, the day after his deposition. Popular for swimming, cycling (50 km lake circuit), and boat cruises. The quieter south shore is a better escape from the crowds than the more developed north.
