The Stadtpark in Spittal an der Drau wraps around Schloss Porcia, one of the finest Renaissance palaces north of the Alps, built 1533-97 with an Italian-influenced arcaded courtyard. The park is free and always accessible; the palace hosts the Komödienspiele Porcia open-air theater festival in July and August. Spittal is on the Salzburg-Villach rail line, about 1.5 hours from Salzburg.
