Friesach is Carinthia’s oldest town and has one of the most complete medieval fortification systems in Austria: a 12th-century city wall with a still-water-filled moat, castle ruins on the hill above the town, and a Dominican monastery inside the ring. The exterior is freely accessible at all times. Located on the Klagenfurt-Graz rail line, about 45 minutes by train from Klagenfurt. Allow a half-day to properly explore the wall, the moat circuit, and the old town.
