The Sonnstein is the hill directly above Traunkirchen on the Traunsee, rising to 984 meters with a mountain hut (Sonnsteinhütte) near the summit serving food and drink. The trail from the village takes about an hour, and the viewpoint gives one of the best panoramic vistas over the Traunsee and Salzkammergut. Free to hike. Traunkirchen is about 10 km south of Gmunden along the lake. Plan 2-3 hours round trip including a hut stop.
