The Semmeringbahn is the world’s first mountain railway, built between 1848 and 1854 and still running on regular ÖBB trains between Vienna and Graz. UNESCO listed it in 1998 as the first railway on the World Heritage list. The line crosses the Semmering Pass through 14 tunnels and 16 viaducts; the Kalte Rinne viaduct is the most photographed section. Ride it on a standard ÖBB ticket (Vienna to Graz approximately EUR 20-35); sit on the right side traveling south. The spectacular mountain section begins above Gloggnitz. No special booking required; the Graz journey from Vienna takes approximately 2.5 hours total.
