Schoenbuehl Castle sits on a limestone cliff above the Danube 5 km east of Melk, marking the western entrance to the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage gorge. The privately owned castle is not accessible to visitors, but its cliff-top position above the river makes it one of the most photographed landmarks on the Danube cruise circuit. The Danube cycle path passes directly below. Combine with Melk Abbey and the Wachau wine villages to the east.
