The Schneebergbahn rack railway has climbed to the top of Lower Austria since 1897, making the Schneeberg (2,076 m) easily accessible from Vienna as a day trip. The modern Salamander train follows the original narrow-gauge route in 40 minutes to the Hochschneeberg plateau, from where the summit is an easy one-hour walk with a view back to Vienna on clear days. Adult round trip costs around EUR 35-45; book ahead at schneebergbahn.at for weekends. Operates May to November. Reach the train from Vienna by rail via Wiener Neustadt to Puchberg am Schneeberg in about 1.5 hours. Heritage steam services run on selected weekends.
