The Schmittenhoehe rises to 2,000 meters directly behind Zell am See, and the cable car from the town center gets you to the top in under 20 minutes. The summit panorama circles the full Hohe Tauern range, with the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters, visible to the south and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun to the southwest.

The Schmittenhoehnbahn cable car from Zell am See town center takes under 20 minutes and operates year-round. In winter the mountain is the main ski area for Zell am See. In summer the Panoramaweg trail around the summit ridge makes a 2 to 3-hour loop with continuous alpine views. A small nineteenth-century Elisabeth Chapel sits near the summit.
