Schlossmuseum Linz

The Schlossmuseum Linz sits inside Linz Castle on the hill above the city, a building that has been here in some form since the Carolingian period in the 9th century. Emperor Friedrich III made this his preferred residence in the fifteenth century, which is why the castle is also called the Friedrichsburg.

Linz Castle above the Danube has housed a museum since the early twentieth century, but its significance goes back much further: Emperor Friedrich III of Habsburg used the castle as his primary residence in the fifteenth century. The Schlossmuseum inside covers Upper Austrian art, natural history, and cultural history. The castle terrace above the city offers the best panorama over Linz and the Danube and is free to enter without a museum ticket. Open Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday.
