Schloss Velden on Carinthia’s Woerthersee is a seventeenth-century lakeside castle that now operates as the luxury Falkensteiner Schlosshotel. The building is not accessible to non-guests, but its yellow facade on the western shore of Austria’s warmest lake is the defining image of Velden, made famous across Austria by a long-running 1980s television series. The public lakeside promenade in front gives the best exterior view. Velden itself is a summer resort town worth stopping at for the lake, the casino, and the restaurant scene; direct trains run from Klagenfurt.
