Schloss Porcia’s three-tiered Renaissance courtyard in Spittal an der Drau is one of the finest in the Alpine region. Built in the 1590s for a Spanish Habsburg administrator who modeled it on Italian palace architecture, the building feels architecturally out of place in a small Carinthian town. That incongruity is the point. The courtyard’s sandstone-carved loggias host summer theater performances that run July through August, making it a rare place where you can watch live theater in a 400-year-old Italian-style courtyard in the Austrian Alps. The folk culture museum inside covers Carinthian regional history. Open Tuesday to Sunday from May to October; combine with a stop at the Millstaetter See, 15 km to the south.
