Schloss Mondsee is the former Benedictine monastery founded in 748 and secularized in 1791, now housing the Pfahlbaumuseum and Klostermuseum in central Mondsee village. The Pfahlbaumuseum covers the Neolithic lake dwelling culture named the “Mondsee Culture” after finds made in the Mondsee shallows, part of the UNESCO Alpine Pile Dwelling World Heritage designation. The Baroque building dates from 17th and 18th century remodeling of the medieval monastery. Open seasonally; check schlossmondsee.at for hours and admission.
