Schloss Hof in the Marchfeld flatlands east of Vienna is Austria’s most complete Baroque country palace complex, built originally for Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1725 and expanded by Maria Theresia into a working estate with seven terraced gardens, a formal palace, and a heritage farm. The farm still maintains rare breed animals today. The terraced gardens descend in seven levels toward the Morava River on the Slovak border, a design project as ambitious as anything comparable in Germany or France. Open daily April to November; the nearest access point by public transport is a bus from Vienna Erdberg. Combine with the nearby Schloss Niederweiden for a full day in the Marchfeld.
