Blutenburg Castle in western Munich dates to the 15th century and preserves an original late-Gothic chapel with altarpieces from the 1490s still in place. The castle now houses the International Youth Library, holding over 500,000 children’s books in 130 languages, and a Michael Ende Museum (The Neverending Story was partly written here). Library open Monday-Saturday from 9:00; chapel and grounds free and accessible during the day. U-Bahn U1 to Pasing, then bus. A genuinely quiet Munich alternative to the city center museums.
