The Schilcher Wine Road runs through western Styria, the only region that produces Schilcher, a rosé wine made exclusively from the Blauer Wildbacher grape. Schilcher is known for sharp acidity and vivid color; it is a deliberately regional product that resists international smoothing. The road connects small estate producers around Stainz, approximately 40 km southwest of Graz. A car is required. Go during harvest season (September-October) for the best direct estate access. Combine with Schloss Stainz above the town and the broader Südsteiermark wine country around Gamlitz.
