The Mariazell Basilica’s two treasury rooms display centuries of votive gifts from pilgrims and Habsburg emperors, including silver ex-votos, historic crowns, and imperial donations from Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Joseph. Austria’s most important Marian pilgrimage site since the 12th century, Mariazell was treated as a quasi-dynastic shrine by the Habsburgs. The treasuries are viewable for a small admission fee; check basilika-mariazell.at for current hours. Mariazell is reachable by the Mariazellerbahn narrow-gauge railway from St. Polten.
