The Schafbergbahn has been steaming up from St. Wolfgang to its 1,783-meter summit since 1893, and original steam locomotives still run on the line. The 35-minute ascent is Austria’s steepest rack railway; the summit panorama covers thirteen Salzkammergut lakes. Strongly book ahead in summer: the train fills weeks out in July and August.
