The Schafberg summit (1,783 m) above the Wolfgangsee offers a panorama covering thirteen Salzkammergut lakes. Most visitors take the steam-powered Schafbergbahn rack railway from St. Wolfgang (operating late April to late October; reserve ahead in summer). Hiking paths also reach the summit, taking approximately 3 hours up from St. Wolfgang. A summit hotel and cafe sit at the top. St. Wolfgang is accessible by bus from Salzburg or by Wolfgangsee ferry from St. Gilgen.
