Evidence of salt extraction in the mountain above Hallstatt dates back approximately 7,000 years. The mine tour descends via wooden sliding shafts, crosses an underground salt lake by raft, and includes a Bronze Age exhibition with original preserved tools and wooden mining structures. The Salzbergbahn funicular lifts visitors from Hallstatt village to the mine entrance; the Skywalk viewpoint is at the same elevation. Tours run May to October, approximately two hours, and sell out in peak summer: book ahead. The Hallstatt mine is the most historically layered of the three Salzwelten sites in the region (Hallstatt, Hallein, Altaussee) and the one that gave archaeologists the name for an entire prehistoric culture.
