Salt mining on the Dürrnberg above Hallein dates to roughly 600 BC, making this one of the oldest documented Celtic mining sites in the world. The show mine tour descends via wooden slides, crosses an underground salt lake by raft, and passes through a section that crosses the Austrian-German border underground. Tours run approximately 1.5 hours at around 8 degrees Celsius. Hallein is 15 km south of Salzburg; the S3 S-Bahn connects from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof in under 20 minutes. The outdoor Celtic trail on the Dürrnberg plateau extends the visit in good weather. Book ahead in summer.
