Running since 1517, the Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden is one of the oldest continuously operating mines in central Europe. The one-hour guided tour enters 650 meters into the mountain by wooden mine train, includes two 40-meter sliding shafts, and crosses an underground salt lake by raft at a constant 12 degrees Celsius. It is a reliable all-weather attraction, particularly strong for families. The mine is 30 km south of Salzburg in Bavaria; bus 840 from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof connects regularly. Booking ahead is recommended in summer. Bring a warm layer.
