Rust is a Free City in Burgenland that purchased its autonomy from Emperor Leopold I in 1681 for 60,000 Reichstaler, most of it raised from wine sales. The old town has 16th and 17th-century merchants’ houses with Renaissance and Baroque facades and stork nests on the chimneys, directly on the Neusiedlersee reed shore. The signature wine is Ruster Ausbruch, a historic sweet wine from botrytized grapes on basalt soil, comparable to Tokaji. By car from Vienna approximately 60 km.
