Romersteinbruch St. Margarethen

The Romersteinbruch at St. Margarethen is a Roman-era limestone quarry that supplied building material for Carnuntum, the major Roman city 30 km to the northwest, and possibly for construction in the broader Pannonian province.

The Romersteinbruch at St. Margarethen supplied limestone to the Roman city of Carnuntum and has been used as an outdoor opera venue since the 1990s. The Oper im Steinbruch festival runs July-August, with performances staged against walls up to 50 meters high in the open quarry. Book tickets well in advance at operimsteinbruch.at. The quarry is near Rust and the Neusiedlersee; combine with the Rust Old Town and the Pannonian wine region for a Burgenland day.
