Roemerstadt Carnuntum, 40 km east of Vienna, is the most completely reconstructed Roman city north of the Alps. The site includes full-scale townhouses with working underfloor heating, a public bath, and the free-standing Heidentor triumphal arch. Carnuntum was the capital of Roman Pannonia with a peak population of 50,000, and Marcus Aurelius wrote parts of his Meditations here during the Marcomannic Wars.
