The Residenzplatz is the ceremonial center of the Salzburg Altstadt, created in 1587 when Archbishop Wolf Dietrich demolished 55 medieval houses to build a proper Italian-style piazza. The Residenzbrunnen fountain, 15 meters tall and carved from local Untersberg marble, is one of the largest Baroque fountains north of the Alps. The Neue Residenz Glockenspiel plays Mozart melodies at 7:00, 11:00, and 18:00 from 35 Antwerp-cast bells. The Christmas market here dates to 1491, making it one of Europe’s oldest.
