The Raxseilbahn is Austria’s oldest cable car, operating since 1926, lifting from Reichenau an der Rax to a flat alpine plateau at 1,550 meters. The Rax is a table mountain with easy walking trails across meadows and dramatic cliff edges, about 90 minutes from Vienna by car. The summit was a retreat for Vienna’s intellectual class in the late Habsburg era, Freud and Schnitzler among them. The Karl-Ludwig-Haus refuge is a 90-minute walk from the top station.
