Rappenlochschlucht

One of the largest gorges in Central Europe, carved by the Dornbirner Ach river through the limestone foothills south of Dornbirn. The trail follows the torrent through walls of rock that rise sharply on both sides, then continues to the Staufensee reservoir and on to the more enclosed Alplochschlucht.

The Rappenlochschlucht south of Dornbirn is one of Central Europe’s largest gorges, carved by the Dornbirner Ach river through dramatic limestone walls. The trail starts near the edge of the city and winds through the gorge to the Staufensee reservoir, then optionally continues to the Alplochschlucht. Free access, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on distance, and walkable from Dornbirn’s southern outskirts. Most sections remain open despite a 2011 rockfall; check trail status before visiting.
