The Porsche Museum in Gmund documents where the Porsche brand actually started. Ferdinand Porsche moved his operation from bombed Stuttgart to this Carinthian market town in 1944. The first Porsche 356 was built by hand in a converted sawmill here in 1948; that car is in the museum. Fifty-two 356s were made in Gmund before production returned to Stuttgart in 1950.
