Hallstatt’s parish church, Mariä Himmelfahrt, is a 15th-century Gothic church on a hillside terrace above the famous lake village. The late-Gothic winged altar is attributed to the workshop of Michael Pacher, the leading South Tyrolean master of the period. The churchyard terrace gives the best elevated view of the village. Next door, the Beinhaus (charnel house) displays over 600 painted skulls decorated with flowers and inscriptions, an unusual local funerary tradition. Both the church and the Beinhaus are free. A short walk uphill from the village center.
