Munich's oldest parish church, affectionately called "Alter Peter," has stood near Marienplatz since the 12th century, though the current Baroque (the ornate, theatrical architectural style of the 17th and 18th centuries) interior dates to extensive rebuilding after WWII bomb damage.

The Peterskirche (Alter Peter) is Munich’s oldest parish church and its best viewing tower. The 91-meter climb gives the clearest panorama of the old town and the Alps on clear days. The Baroque interior was largely rebuilt after WWII. The glass-encased jewel-decorated skeleton of Saint Munditia behind the main altar is one of the Counter-Reformation’s stranger legacies: a Roman-era martyr’s remains dressed in jewels and displayed as a relic. Church entry is free; the tower costs approximately EUR 3-5. Adjacent to Marienplatz.
