The Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal in Venice holds one of Europe’s finest concentrations of early 20th-century modernist art, assembled by Guggenheim herself between 1938 and 1946 as European modernism was being driven into exile by fascism. Pollock, Ernst, Magritte, Kandinsky, Duchamp. The palazzo was her home from 1949 until her death; her ashes are buried in the sculpture garden.
