Ossiacher See

The Ossiacher See is the lake you choose when the Woerthersee feels too loud. Both are warm, low-altitude Carinthian lakes, and both have clear water and good summer swimming.

The Ossiacher See in Carinthia is a warm, relatively quiet alternative to the more developed Woerthersee. The lake covers 10.8 square kilometers and warms to 26 degrees Celsius in summer. The former Benedictine monastery Stift Ossiach, on the south shore, hosts the Carinthischer Sommer classical music festival each July and August, one of Austria’s major choral and chamber music events. The lake is best reached by bus from Villach (20 minutes). Free access; Carinthischer Sommer concerts require tickets (check carinthischersommer.at).
