The Olympiapark was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics on a site of WWII rubble, its artificial hills formed from 10 million cubic meters of debris. The tent-roof canopy designed by Frei Otto and Guenther Behnisch (74,800 square meters of acrylic over steel cables) remains one of the most significant works of 20th-century architecture in Germany. The 1972 Munich massacre, in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed, happened in the adjacent Olympic Village; a memorial is a 10-minute walk from the park.
