Bratislava’s Staré Mesto (old town) is one of the most compact historic city centers in Central Europe, but it carries an outsized history. From 1536 to 1784, when Buda was under Ottoman occupation, Bratislava served as the royal capital of Hungary, and eleven Habsburg monarchs were crowned in St. Martin’s Cathedral here. The pedestrian core around Hlavne Namestie is walkable from the train station in 15 minutes. The city is also one hour from Vienna by rail or Danube boat, making it an easy extension of an Austria trip.
