The Oberstadt of Bregenz is the original medieval town, perched on a hill above the modern lakeside city and enclosed by remnants of its Roman-era and medieval walls. The Martinsturm, with its enormous Baroque onion dome, is the visual anchor and houses a small local history museum.

The Oberstadt is Bregenz’s medieval upper town, enclosed by Roman-era and medieval walls on a hill above the Bodensee. The Martinsturm, with what is reputedly the largest onion dome in the German-speaking world relative to its tower, is the landmark and houses a local history museum. Views extend across Lake Constance to Germany and Switzerland. The upper town takes 30 minutes to walk; combine with a visit to the Vorarlberg Museum below and the Pfaender cable car above for a full Bregenz day. Free access; small museum fee. 10-minute walk from Bregenz Hauptbahnhof.
